How often does a Wordle answer repeat a letter?
Across all 1,352 curated answers, 428, about 31.7%, contain at least one repeated letter. That is roughly one answer in three, so duplicates are not an edge case. They are a routine part of the game that you should expect every few puzzles.
Which letters double up most?
Not all letters repeat equally. These are the letters that most often appear twice in a single answer, by number of answers containing the double.

The tile rule that catches players out
When you guess a letter more times than it appears in the answer, the extra copies turn grey. Here you guessed LLAMA and the answer was ALOFT, which contains just one L and one A:
The second L (now correct, green) and one A (yellow) are accounted for. The spare L and spare A go grey even though those letters are in the word, they have simply been used up.
What it means for your strategy
Keep duplicates on the table. When a half-solved word will not resolve and you are sure of its letters, try doubling one of them: words like ABBEY, EERIE and LLANO routinely beat players who assume every position is a different letter. Just do not double up in your opener: a strong first guess uses five distinct letters to maximise information, as the best starting words show. For the wider picture, see the letter-frequency data, and when you are mid-puzzle, the Wordle Solver handles duplicate-letter feedback correctly for you.
Frequently asked questions
Can Wordle answers have double letters?
Yes, and far more often than most players assume. About 31.7% of answers, 428 of 1,352, contain a repeated letter, such as ABBEY, EERIE or SHEEP.
What is the most common doubled letter in Wordle?
E is the most commonly doubled letter, appearing twice in 88 answers. S and A are the next most common.
Can a Wordle answer have the same letter three times?
It is rare but possible: 6 answers contain a letter three times (for example MUMMY). Triple letters are unusual enough that you should only consider them once other options are exhausted.
Why do duplicate letters trip players up?
Once a letter turns green or yellow, players tend to assume it appears only once and stop testing it. With roughly a third of answers repeating a letter, that assumption regularly eliminates the correct word, especially when the double sits in an unusual position.
How do I account for duplicate letters?
When a familiar pattern will not resolve, deliberately test a double of a confirmed letter. Note too that Wordle’s tile colours follow specific rules for repeats: a letter can show one green and one grey if it appears once in the answer but twice in your guess.
Should my opening word contain a double letter?
No. An opener should use five distinct letters to gather the most information. Doubling a letter wastes a slot. Save duplicate-letter guesses for later, once the field has narrowed. See the best starting words for the strongest five-distinct-letter openers.
How does this data stay current?
The figures are tallied directly from the current curated answer set and refresh whenever it changes. The overall pattern (about one answer in three repeating a letter) is very stable.
