The tile rule that catches players out
When you guess a letter more times than it appears in the answer, the extra copies turn grey. Here you guessed LLAMA and the answer was ALOFT, which contains just one L and one A:

What it means for your strategy
Keep duplicates on the table. When a half-solved word will not resolve and you are sure of its letters, try doubling one of them: words like ABBEY, EERIE and LLANO routinely beat players who assume every position is a different letter.
