What makes a good opening word?
A great Wordle opener is not the one that “feels” clever, it is the one that eliminates the most possibilities on average. Information theory makes this precise: the best guess is the one whose green/yellow/grey feedback splits the remaining answers into the most even, most numerous groups. That quantity is the guess’s expected information gain, measured in bits of entropy.
In practice, strong openers share three traits: they use five distinct letters (no wasted repeats), they cover high-frequency letters, S, E, A, R, T, L, O, N, and they place those letters where they commonly occur. You can see the underlying letter patterns on our Wordle letter-frequency page.
Top 20 opening words by information gain
These are the highest-entropy openers from the full dictionary of valid guesses. “Avg. answers left” is how many of the 1,352 possible answers would still remain, on average, after playing the word. Lower is better.

Best openers that are also possible answers (hard mode)
The words above include guesses that can never be the answer (like SALET or LARES). In hard mode, or if you like the small thrill that your opener might just win outright, you want the strongest word that is itself a possible answer. These lead that list:
| # | Word | Entropy (bits) | Avg. answers left | Vowels |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | TALES | 6.13 | 30 | 2 |
| 2 | TEARS | 6.12 | 31 | 2 |
| 3 | RATES | 6.10 | 29 | 2 |
| 4 | LANES | 6.03 | 32 | 2 |
| 5 | TRIES | 6.02 | 32 | 2 |
| 6 | TIRES | 6.02 | 33 | 2 |
| 7 | RAISE | 5.98 | 31 | 3 |
| 8 | TILES | 5.92 | 37 | 2 |
| 9 | ROLES | 5.91 | 34 | 2 |
| 10 | TONES | 5.90 | 37 | 2 |
Why CRANE, ADIEU and AUDIO underperform
The most-recommended openers online are not the strongest. Here is how some famous choices actually rank against the full field. CRANE and SLATE are genuinely good; ADIEU and AUDIO trail badly because they spend too many letters on vowels and skip the consonants that decide most puzzles.
| Word | Entropy (bits) | Avg. answers left | Entropy rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| SLATE | 6.05 | 33 | #16 |
| STARE | 5.98 | 32 | #29 |
| RAISE | 5.98 | 31 | #30 |
| CRANE | 5.64 | 47 | #345 |
| ADIEU | 4.93 | 70 | #4,159 |
| AUDIO | 4.54 | 112 | #8,010 |

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Wordle starting word?
By expected information gain, TARES tops the ranking at 6.22 bits, narrowing the 1,352 possible answers to roughly 28 on average. Other elite openers include SALET, LARES and TARES, all built from the high-frequency letters S, E, A, R, T and L.
Is CRANE a good opening word?
CRANE is a solid, popular opener, but it is not optimal: it ranks well outside the top 100 by entropy and leaves more answers in play than letter-frequency-optimal words like TARES or SALET. It is a fine choice if you prefer a familiar real word.
Why is AUDIO not a great opening word?
AUDIO front-loads four vowels but spends only one slot on a consonant, so it misses the high-value letters R, S, T and L that decide most puzzles. It leaves about 112 answers in play, several times more than the best openers, and ranks around #8,010.
Should I guess vowels first?
Cover one or two vowels in your opener, but not at the expense of common consonants. The best openers pair a couple of vowels (A, E) with high-frequency consonants (R, S, T, L), rather than stacking three or four vowels.
What is the best opener if I play hard mode?
In hard mode your guess must stay consistent with earlier clues, so a strong opener that is itself a possible answer is valuable. Words like TALES, TEARS and RATES top the ranking restricted to possible answers. See the hard-mode table above.
How is "best" measured on this page?
Each candidate word is tested against every one of the 1,352 possible answers. We bucket the answers by the green/yellow/grey feedback the guess would produce, then score the guess by the Shannon entropy of that split (expected information gain) and by the average number of answers it leaves behind.
How many possible Wordle answers are there?
Our analysis uses 1,352 curated answers. The dictionary of valid guesses is far larger, 15,783 five-letter words, but the daily answer is only ever drawn from the smaller curated set.
Can Wordle answers contain duplicate letters?
Yes. About 31.7% of answers repeat a letter (for example ABBEY or EERIE). This is a frequent reason players eliminate the correct word too early, so it pays to keep duplicate letters in mind once you are down to a few candidates.
How many vowels does a typical answer have?
The average answer contains about 1.78 vowels. Most answers have one or two, and very few have three or more, which is why heavily vowel-loaded openers waste guesses.
Does a better opener actually lower my guess average?
Yes, on average. A higher-entropy opener leaves fewer candidates after the first guess, so you reach the answer in fewer turns over many games. Any single day still depends on luck, but the long-run average improves.
Should I always use the same opening word?
A consistent, strong opener removes guesswork and is what most expert solvers recommend. Rotating openers rarely helps unless you are deliberately playing for fun or chasing a specific letter.
What is the most common starting letter in Wordle answers?
S is the most common first letter by a wide margin, followed by C, B, T and P. That is one reason S-rich openers perform so well.
