How to Win Wordle Hard Mode

Hard mode forces every guess to obey your clues. That one rule changes how you should open and narrow down. Here is the approach, and the strongest openers that can win outright.

The rule that changes everything

In hard mode, every guess must reuse all revealed clues: greens stay locked in place and yellows must appear somewhere. You can no longer burn a guess on a pure information-gathering word that ignores your clues. Everything else about Wordle is the same. You just have to be smarter about how you gather information.

Open with a word that could also win

Since you cannot probe freely later, the value of an opener that is itself a possible answer goes up. These are the highest-information openers drawn only from possible answers, strong on day one and never wasted in hard mode.

Then squeeze every guess

After your opener, choose the most informative word still consistent with your clues, ideally one that introduces new high-frequency letters in their likely positions. Read your grey tiles hard: they rule letters out everywhere and do most of the work. Keep duplicate letters in mind, since about a third of answers repeat one. What is Wordle hard mode?

Hard mode is an optional setting that forces every guess to reuse all the clues you have revealed. Any green letter must stay in its position, and any yellow letter must appear somewhere in your next guess. You switch it on in Wordle’s settings.

Does hard mode make Wordle harder?

It removes options rather than adding difficulty to the puzzle itself. You can no longer play a throwaway word purely to test new letters, so you must extract information using guesses that also satisfy your existing clues. With good technique, win rates stay high.

What is the best opener for hard mode?

Why does hard mode change which opener is best?

In normal play the theoretically best openers (like SALET) can never be the answer, which is fine because you can keep probing. In hard mode every guess must fit your clues, so an opener that could also win outright carries more weight.
