How Many Wordle Words Are There? The Two Numbers That Matter
The game will accept far more words than it will ever ask you to find. We separate the valid-guess list from the curated answer pool and put live counts on both.
Short answer: 15,783 words are valid guesses, but only 1,352 can be the answer. Those are the two numbers hiding behind every version of this question. The first is the permissive list of five-letter words the grid will accept without shaking. The second is the curated pool the daily solution is actually drawn from. Our figures come from the lists that power this site’s research and solver, a full valid-guess list and a curated answer list, and we quote them live rather than repeating official counts that shift as editors revise the game.

Two lists, one game
Wordle runs on a two-tier dictionary, and most disagreement about “how many words” comes from mixing the tiers up. The guess list answers the question “what am I allowed to type?”. The answer list answers “what might I be asked to find?”. When your tiles flip instead of shaking, you have played a word from the first list. When the whole row turns green, you have found a word from the second.
| List | Words | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Valid guesses | 15,783 | Every five-letter word the grid will accept |
| Curated answers | 1,352 | The pool the daily solution is drawn from |
The overlap runs one way. Almost every curated answer also sits on the guess list, but only about 8.6% of valid guesses will ever appear as a solution. The rest are playable, useful for probing, and destined never to be the word of the day.
Why the gap exists
The two lists solve opposite problems. A guess list is built to be generous, because rejecting a real word is the fastest way to make a player distrust the game. So the accepted list waves through archaic terms, dialect spellings, technical vocabulary and obscure inflections. AAHED, CRWTH and XYLYL all sit in our valid-guess list, and none of them is a word most players could produce on demand.
An answer list is built to be fair. A solution that obscure would not read as difficult, it would read as rigged, because no amount of clever deduction leads you to a word you have never met. Curated answers therefore skew familiar and everyday, which keeps Wordle a test of deduction rather than a vocabulary exam. Hard days come from awkward letter patterns, not from words nobody knows.
Put those two pressures together and a large gap is inevitable. The guess list grows because generosity costs nothing. The answer list stays small because familiarity is scarce. In our data that leaves 15,783 playable words chasing 1,352 possible solutions.
What the gap means for your guesses
You can turn the asymmetry into strategy. Guesses only need to be on the big list, so the strongest information-gathering openers do not have to be plausible answers at all. TARES tops our opener rankings despite never appearing in our curated answer pool, and measured across all 1,352 answers it leaves roughly 28 candidates standing on average. Our ranked list of starting words scores hundreds of openers on exactly this basis.
If you want the raw material behind these numbers, our five-letter words research sets out the full letter statistics for the five-letter game. And when you would rather watch the lists at work than read about them, the Wordle Solver plays from this same data, shrinking the live candidate count with every row of feedback.
Frequently asked questions
How many Wordle words are there?
There are two numbers. The valid-guess list we analyse contains 15,783 five-letter words, while the curated answer list holds 1,352. The first is what you may type, the second is what you might be asked to find.
Are all five-letter words valid guesses in Wordle?
No. A guess only counts if it appears on the accepted word list, which in our data runs to 15,783 entries. The list is generous enough to include very obscure words, but invented strings of letters are rejected.
Why are Wordle answers always fairly common words?
Because the answer pool is curated for familiarity. An obscure answer would be unguessable rather than difficult, since deduction cannot lead you to a word you have never met. The far larger guess list absorbs the obscure vocabulary instead.
Will Wordle ever run out of answers?
Not soon. At one puzzle a day, a curated pool of 1,352 answers covers about 3.7 years before it would need to repeat, and answer lists are revised and refreshed over time.
Should I open with a word that cannot be the answer?
Yes, if it gathers more information. Openers are judged by how well they split the remaining answers, and some of the best splitters, including TARES, sit on the guess list without appearing in our curated answer pool.
